Whether or not you can crush Lamictal (lamotrigine) depends on the the specific dosage form that you have. If it is the immediate release Lamictal tablets, then yes, they can be safely crushed.
If it is Lamictal XR or any extended-release table, it cannot be crushed.
There are also chewable tablets that can be crushed, chewed or disintegrated into water or juice.
In addition, Lamictal is available as an ODT (oral disintegrating tablets) dosage form that can be crushed or simply dissolved on the tongue and then are swallowed.
Lamcital (Lamotrigine) Information
Lamotrigine is an anti-seizure medication that acts on different chemicals within the brain to exert its effect. This medication can also be used to treat Bipolar Disorder as well.
The most common side effect seen with this medication is nausea, it can also cause sleep disturbances and dizziness as well as edema. In rare cases, patients can also develop a life-threatening rash, so if one develops on your body please seek medical attention. This drug has no interaction with food and it can be taken with or without a meal as it does not alter how well the medication is absorbed.
Crushing Lamictal (Lamotrigene)
As discussed above, the following forms of Lamictal can be safely crushed, cut or split:
- Immediate release Lamictal (lamotrigene) tablets
- Chewable Lamictal tablets
- Dissolvable (ODT) Lamictal tablets
The extended release (e.g. XR or ER) forms of Lamictal cannot be crushed.
