Joe asked

Can you split the 10mg tablet of Claritin or even the 5mg?

Answer

Splitting Claritin - LoratadineYes, Claritin tablets can be split or cut in half safely. Splitting or cutting tablets is sometimes necessary for individuals that have trouble swallowing large pills.

However, it is important to note that Claritin is also available as Liqui-Gels and those should not be cut or split.

If you are having trouble swallowing Claritin, you have alternatives to splitting tablets as Claritin comes in a variety of doses and formulations.

Claritin is available in the following forms:

  • Claritin 10mg Tablets
  • Claritin 5mg RediTabs 12 Hour (Dissolvable)
  • Claritin 10mg RediTabs 24 Hour (Dissolvable)
  • Claritin 10mg Liqui-Gels 24 Hour
  • Claritin 5mg Chewables 24 Hour For Juniors
  • Claritin 5mg Chewables 24 Hour For Juniors
  • Claritin 5mg/5ml Syrup 24 Hour For Children

As shown above, Claritin is available in multiple forms that do not require you to swallow whole tablets. Claritin RediTabs dissolve quickly in the mouth and the chewable tablets can be chewed and swallowed. In addition, although Claritin Syrup is marketed for kids, you can take an adult dose (10mg) of the syrup simply by taking two teaspoonfuls.

Summary
  • Claritin Tablets can be split or cut in half.
  • Claritin Liqui-Gels can not be split or cut in half.
  • Claritin is available in multiple dosage forms, so tablet cutting may not be necessary. Aside from tablets, Claritin is available as Liqui-Gels, RediTabs (dissolvable), Chewable tablets and as a syrup.
