Can you take Xyzal with sudafed. What is the difference between Allegra and Xyzal for allergies? Thank you!

Answer

Xyzal (levocetirizine) is a non-sedating H1 "third-generation" antihistamine, available both by prescription and over the counter for the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It can provide relief for a variety of symptoms including:

  • Urticaria (hives)
  • Itchy and watery eyes and nose
  • Sneezing

Xyzal is taken once daily and generally lasts around 24 hours per dose. Side effects may include drowsiness in a low percentage of users. This medication may be taken in the evening if drowsiness occurs.

Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) is a decongestant used to treat sinus congestion and pressure caused by the common cold or allergies. This medication provides temporary symptomatic relief by promoting nasal or sinus drainage. Sudafed is available as a regular release 4 to 6-hour tablet, an extended release 12-hour tablet, an extended release 24-hour tablet, as well as an oral liquid formulation.

Sudafed can be taken with or without food but if taking the extended release formulations, it is important not to crush or chew the tablets.

Common side effects associated with taking Sudafed include but are not limited to:

  • Anxiety
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sleep problems
  • Tremor
  • Nausea

People with high blood pressure or heart conditions should avoid using Sudafed due to a higher risk of harmful side effects. Consult your doctor if you have a chronic condition before taking Sudafed.

Taking Xyzal With Sudafed

There are no drug-drug interactions between Xyzal and Sudafed. These medications may be taken together. If you take other medications, you should consult with a doctor or pharmacist to be sure that these medications do not interact with other medications that you are already taking.

Additional Information

In regard to Allegra (fexofenadine), it is "second-generation" antihistamine approved for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis as well as chronic urticaria. Allegra is available over the counter as a 12 hour tablet, a 24 hour tablet/gelcap, an orally disintegrating tablet, and an oral liquid.

Allegra and Xyzal have a similar mechanism of action and common side effects. Allegra is available over the counter generically as fexofenadine, whereas Xyzal does not currently have a generic available.

Xyzal may be more costly than fexofenadine. Patients may experience similar benefit from Allegra and Xyzal, though one may work better than the other for a particular individual. These drugs should not be used concurrently.
