Kat asked
Can you take tramadol while taking Mavyret?
At a glance
- There is no known drug interaction between tramadol and Mavyret. They are safe to take together but be sure to take Mavyret with food.
Answer
There is no known drug interaction between tramadol and Mavyret (glecaprevir; pibrentasvir). They are considered safe to take together.
While there is no interaction between these drugs, it is important to be aware of other drugs that may interact with Mavyret.
Since Mavyret is used to treat hepatitis C, taking an interacting drug that may lower concentrations of it could potentially cause serious consequences, including treatment failure or even drug resistance.
Be sure to ask your pharmacist or doctor about other drugs you are taking (over the counter ones included) that could potentially interact with Mavyret if you are unsure.
In the next sections, I give some general information about the drugs in question, tramadol and Mavyret
Tramadol Information
Tramadol is a dual-action pain reliever. It not only is a mu-opioid receptor agonist but also increases levels of norepinephrine and serotonin by acting as a reuptake inhibitor.
Immediate-release tramadol products begin working within 15 to 30 minutes after taking a dose by mouth and effects last around 4 to 6 hours. Extended-release products up to 24 hours per dose.
Additional dosage forms of tramadol are available as well, including:
- Rybix (orally disintegrating tablet)
- Ultram ER (extended-release)
- Ryzolt (extended-release)
- Conzip (immediate-release; extended-release capsules)
Mavyret Information
Mavyret contains two drugs:
- Glecaprevir
- Pibrentasvir
Glecaprevir is a protease inhibitor while pibrentasvir is an NS5A (Nonstructural protein 5A) inhibitor. Mavyret is indicated for the treatment of chronic HCV (hepatitis C) infection.
The standard treatment duration with Mavyret is 8 weeks. Each dose should be taken with food for optimal absorption.
