What are your thoughts on taking or adding Wellbeturin while on pain medications? I've be on pain medication for years and now I'm trying to quit smoking.I take Ms Contin and Norco daily.. Should I be concerned about the chance of these together increasing any side affects? Any information will be appreciated.

Answer

Wellbutrin (buprorpion) is typically considered OK to take along with most pain medications, including opioids such as Norco (hydrocodone/acetaminophen) and MS Contin (morphine sulfate). There is no reported drug interaction between Wellbutrin and those pain medications.

Having said that, there is a precaution with the combination if you have have a seizure disorder, or have a history of seizures. High doses of opioids are associated with an increased risk of seizure. In addition, It is well documented that Wellbutrin lowers the seizure threshold. Theoretically, combining high doses of Wellbutrin and opioids increases seizure risk. In general however, if you are taking appropriately prescribed doses and have no history of seizures, the combination should be relatively safe.
