There are no known drug interactions between Macrobid (nitrofurantoin) and Effexor XR (venlafaxine extended-release). They are considered safe to take together.

Below is additional information regarding each medication.

What Is Effexor XR?

Venlafaxine extended-release is an oral antidepressant agent of the SNRI (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) class. It works as a "dual" inhibitor, inhibiting the reuptake of not only serotonin but norepinephrine as well.

Venlafaxine is used for a variety of indications including:

  • Depression
  • Panic disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Neuropathy
  • Fibromyalgia

The effect profile of venlafaxine is similar to medication in the SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) class, and can include:

  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Sedation
  • Hyperarousal/insomnia
  • Weight fluctuations

As venlafaxine also affects norepinephrine, it has been reported to potentially increase blood pressure in certain individuals and may have additional drug interactions when compared to SSRIs.

Like most antidepressants, venlafaxine needs to be dosed consistently for optimal effects and therapeutic benefit. It should be taken with food, in the morning or evening at the same time each day.

Venlafaxine is available in a variety of formulations including:

  • Immediate-release tablets
  • Extended-release capsules
  • Extended-release tablets

What is Macrobid?

Nitrofurantoin is an antibacterial agent, most often used to treat urinary tract infections caused by both gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria.

Two forms of nitrofurantoin are available:

  • Macrobid (nitrofurantoin MONOHYDRATE/macrocrystals)
  • Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin macrocrystals)

Both Macrobid and Macrodantin have similar efficacy and side effect profiles. The notable difference between the two is that Macrobid is dosed twice daily while Macrodantin is dosed four times daily.

Macrobid may be given without regard to meals, but taking with food, water, or milk can increase tolerability.
