Brendan asked
Can I take cheratussin with Sinex night time? I’m 6’2” and 250 lbs and I’m having trouble sleeping because of sinus pressure and cough/chest congestion.
Answer
Sinex comes in multiple formulations (as discussed below). Most are safe to take with Cheratussin (guaifenesin/codeine) but you do want to avoid nighttime Sinex formulations due to the risk of additive sedative effects from both. Below are the common Sinex formulations along with a note regarding whether or not they are safe to take with Cheratussin.
Sinex Formulations With Cheratussin
Sinex Daytime Liquicaps
- Acetaminophen (analgesic)
- Phenylephrine (nasal decongestant)
Sinex Daytime is safe to take with Cheratussin and there is no interaction between the two.
Sinex Nighttime Liquicaps
- Acetaminophen (analgesic)
- Phenylephrine (nasal decongestant)
- Doxylamine (sedating antihistamine)
Sinex Nighttime should not be taken with Cheratussin. Sinex Nighttime contains doxylamine, a sedating second generation antihistamine. Combining both could cause excess sedation and increase the risk of side effects such as confusion, dry mouth, dry eyes and constipation.
Sinex Nasal Spray
- Oxymetazoline (nasal decongestant)
Summary
Cheratussin is safe to take with most Sinex products. It should not however be taken with Sinex Nighttime.
