Mya asked
I am on Valium daily and I am wondering if was considered safe to take Benadryl once in awhile.
Answer
It generally is not recommended to take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Valium (diazepam) together. Coadministration of the medications can potentially increase the CNS (central nervous system) related side effects of each. Such side effects include:
- Sedation
- Dizziness
- Respiratory depression (rare)
There are certain situations where both could be used together if necessary, which is discussed below.
Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) Information
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is classified as a "first generation" antihistamine. First generation antihistamines are known for their relatively short duration of action (4 to 6 hours) and their sedative effects. While Benadryl is beneficial for the symptoms of perennial and seasonal allergies, it is most commonly used to stem allergic reactions (i.e. anaphylaxis) and as a sleep aide to combat insomnia.
Benadryl is often used for its sedative effects as is a common ingredient in many over the counter sleep aide products such as ZzzQuil.
Valium (Diazepam) Information
Valium (diazepam) is a benzodiazepine noted for its long duration of action and half-life. Benzodiazepines are used for a wide variety of indications including insomnia, anxiety, seizures and muscle spasms. Benzodiazepines, such as Valium, have significant CNS depressant effects, which are responsible for producing sedation, muscle relaxation and anticonvulsant activity.
Taking Benadryl And Valium Together
Due the potential for additive central nervous system adverse effects such as sedation and respiratory depression, combining Benadryl and Valium is not recommended. If you are looking to add Benadryl while taking Valium, be sure to speak with your doctor regarding the potential safety concerns in your specific situation.
The use of Benadryl is considered to be okay for those taking Valium if it is being used to stem an allergic reaction (i.e. anaphylaxis). Benadryl is the most effective and accessible over the counter medication in these situations and should be used as necessary.
