Smith asked
I take Bufferin for headaches and wanted to see if it was safe to take Benadryl with it?
Answer
There is no interaction between Bufferin and Benadryl. Taking these medications together is safe.
Bufferin
Bufferin is a brand name for the "buffered aspirin", which is aspirin combined with an antacid combination of calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate. These antacids are added to aspirin to help neutralize stomach acid and reduce potential stomach irritation.
Aspirin inhibits COX-1 to produce an antiplatelet effect (blood thinning) and also has an anti-inflammatory effect.
Benadryl
Benadryl is a first-generation antihistamine, commonly used for allergies, allergic reactions and for insomnia as it has fairly potent sedating effects. Benadryl works by blocking inflammation mediators from histamine release.
Taking Bufferin With Benadryl
There is no drug interaction between Bufferin and Benadryl. They both work in different ways and use together will not result in toxicities or additive adverse effects of either drug. While these medications may not interact with one another, it is good to know that both interact with alcohol. Do not consume alcohol with either of these medications as that may result in an increased risk of bleeding (seen with Bufferin) or increased sedation and drowsiness (seen with Benadryl).
Summary
- Bufferin and Benadryl can safely be taken together.
