Bill asked

What is the difference between psyllium fiber and metamucil?

At a glance

  • Metamucil is one of several over the counter products that contain psyllium fiber, a bulk-forming laxative.

Answer

There is no difference between Metamucil and psyllium fiber. Metamucil is simply a brand name that contains psyllium fiber.

However, it is important to note however that since Metamucil is a product, it contains several other ingredients, such as sweeteners (e.g. sugar or aspartame) and coloring. If you are looking to avoid certain ingredients, be sure to look at the label of the product.

What Is Psyllium Fiber?

Psyllium is a bulk-forming laxative, derived from the seeds of Plantago psyllium. In addition to its effect on the stool, psyllium has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels in patients.

Psyllium fibers work by absorbing liquid in the GI tract, causing expansion of the stool, which helps to facilitate peristalsis and increase bowel motility.

It is important to take psyllium fiber with the appropriate amount of water to ease administration. In addition, fiber supplements should generally not be taken with other medication due to the risk of altered absorption.
