I am looking for an alternative medication to Endep, without lactose as an inactive ingredient. I take 10mg at the moment and may be moving to 25mg. I am severely lactose intolerant and have to get the Endep made up, which is incredibly expensive. I take it for having chronic migraines

Answer

Endep is also known as Elavil or Amitriptyline.  Depending on the country you live in, there may be a manufacturer that makes lactose free amitriptyline.

I did a little research and found a manufacturer that makes the drug with no lactose...

Mylan Amitriptyline 10 mg tablet:

  • Calcium Sulfate
  • Corn Starch
  • Hydroxypropyl Cellulose
  • Hypromellose
  • Magnesium Stearate
  • Microcrystalline Cellulose
  • Polyethylene Glycol
  • Silicon Dioxide (Colloidal)
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Sodium Starch Glycolate
  • Titanium Dioxide

They also make a 25 mg version that does not have lactose listed as an ingredient.

If that for some reason is not available, there are many different options for migraine prophylaxis. Typically prophylaxis treatment is used in people that need to use medication at least two days a week for a migraine attack.

First line therapy typically includes beta blockers (propranolo, metoprolol etc...), Topamax (Topiramate) and Depakote (Valproic Acid).

Other options include the following:

  • Amitriptyline (The medication you currently take)
  • Venlafaxine (A good option in those with associated depression)
  • Botox (botulinum toxin) is only for CHRONIC migraines, at or over 15 days per month

Natural remedies such as  Butterbur, riboflavin, magnesium, or feverfew might help prevent migraine. They typically are safe to use.
