Wendy asked
I've been prescribed propranolol for anxiety but have noticed there islLactose in it which I'm intolerant to. Is there a beta blocker that is lactose free?
Answer
Yes, there are many beta blocker medications that do not contain lactose. In fact, propranolol is made by multiple manufacturers that do not include lactose in their tablets.
Be sure to ask your pharmacy if they are able to get a propranolol product that does not contain lactose. They should be able to identify one for you and see if it is available to purchase.
One example of a lactose free propranolol product is the one manufactured by Mylan. Their tablets contain propranolol for the active ingredient and the following inactive ingredients:
- Colloidal silicon dioxide
- Croscarmellose sodium
- Magnesium stearate
- Microcrystalline cellulose
- Pregelatinized starch
- Sodium lauryl sulfate
There may be other propranolol products available from different manufacturers as well that do not contain lactose. Be sure to check with your pharmacy for availability.
If for some reason your pharmacy cannot get a lactose free propranolol, there are a variety of beta-blocker medications that should have lactose free options.
