Susie asked

My medication is on backorder, I take alogliptin 25mg. what I can I take in place of it?

Answer

Alogliptin (brand name Nesina) is a dipeptidyl-peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibitor for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It can be used either alone, or in combination with other antidiabetic agents.

If alogliptin is out of stock, and you cannot find it at other pharmacies, I would suggest talking to your doctor about switching to a different drug in the same class of medications. Other medications on the market are:

  • Tradjenta (Linagliptin)
  • Onglyza (Saxagliptin)
  • Januvia (Sitagliptin)

You would probably have the best results and least chance of complicating issues changing to something in the same class of medications. The only potential issue I see is that all of the other medications in this class of drugs are brand name only, so cost may be an issue. If it is, talk to your doctor about potentially increasing the dose of another one of your medications or trying a different class of medications temporarily.
