Steven asked
Is Benadryl for dogs different than Benadryl for humans? Can I give my dog the Benadryl I use?
Answer
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a first generation antihistamine that is available for purchase over the counter. Benadryl is marketed under the brand name Vetadryl for veterinary use. Benadryl and Vetadryl are the made up of the same active ingredient, dipenhydramine. They are safe for use in both dogs and cats.
In most cases, it is safe to use over the counter Benadryl tablets that are intended for human use in dogs. However, caution is advised if using liquid Benadryl as some artificial sweeteners, such as xylitol, are toxic to dogs.
Although available as an over the counter medication, diphenhydramine should only be used for animals under the direct supervision of a veterinarian. The recommended dosing can very greatly depending on the species, breed, weight, and age of the animal as well as any other preexisting conditions that the animal may have.
Common side effects of diphenhydramine in animals include:
- Drowsiness in dogs
- Hyperactivity in cats
- Loss of appetite
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
Preexisting conditions that may preclude your veterinarian from recommending diphenhydramine include but are not limited to:
- Asthma
- COPD
- Cardiac disease
- Glaucoma
- Bladder obstruction
- Pregnancy
Summary
Benadryl (dipenhydramine) sold over the counter for human use is the same medication that under the recommendation and supervision of a veterinarian, is used in animals. You should always check with your veterinarian before giving your pet any medication including Benadryl.
