How long does Claritin last? The box says the dose is one tablet per 24 hours but I feel like my dose is wearing off about half way throughout the day.

Answer

The duration of action of Claritin (loratadine) allergy medication is about 24 hours long. Studies have shown the effects of the medication actually last slightly longer than 24 hours, but nevertheless, is indicated for once daily dosing. After taking by mouth, Claritin (loratadine) begins to work quickly, with an onset of action of within 1 to 3 hours. Maximum effectiveness will occur about 8 to 12 hours after taking the medication.

The manufacturer states that Claritin (loratadine) can be taken with or without food, but when taken with food, the absorption of the drug increases as well as the maximum concentration reached in the blood. It is unknown if that affects how well the medications works or not.

Claritin (loratadine) is a good choice for a non-sedating all day allergy medication. Unlike other allergy medications such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine), Claritin (loratadine) is much less likely to cause sedation and also has the benefit of lasting much longer. It is used for seasonal allergies, allergic rhinitis, uticaria (itching) and other general allergy symptoms.
