Jeremy asked

I was just dispensed amoxicillin and the section of the label that says how long it is good in the fridge is cut off. How long is it good in the refrigerator after getting from the pharmacy?

Answer

Amoxicillin liquids (i.e. suspensions) can actually be stored in the refrigerator or at room temperature, however refrigeration is preferable as it increases tolerability for most individuals, especially children. In other words, it tastes better chilled. Regardless of how you store amoxicillin suspension, they all expire after 14 days

Amoxicillin suspension is made by a variety of generic manufacturers (e.g. Sandoz, Teva, Par, Dr. Reddy) but all have directions similar to the following (which is from the prescribing information for brand Amoxil suspension):

"Keep bottle tightly closed. Any unused portion of the reconstituted suspension must be discarded after 14 days. Refrigeration preferable, but not required."

The above required storage conditions are the same for all strengths of amoxicillin suspension from all manufacturers, which include:

  • Amoxicillin 125mg/5mL
  • Amoxicillin 200mg/5mL
  • Amoxicillin 250mg/5mL
  • Amoxicillin 400mg/5mL

Be sure to always shake amoxicillin suspension well prior to each administration and measure each dosage with calibrated spoon, cup, or oral syringe to ensure accuracy. The measured dose of suspension may be added to formula, milk, fruit juice, water, ginger ale, or cold drinks for ease of administration.

After picking up amoxicillin from the pharmacy (the pharmacist will reconstitute a dry powder by adding water to it), store it under refrigeration (preferred) or at controlled room temperature for up to 14 days and discard any unused portion after 14 days.
