Is it okay to have sex when using flagystatin ovules?

Answer

Flagystatin (Metronidazole and Nystatin) is a vaginal medication that is used to treat yeast, bacterial vaginal infections and a variety of sexually transmitted diseases. It contains two drugs:

  • Metronidazole that treats the bacterial or sexually transmitted infection.
  • Nystatin that treats the yeast infection.

Flagystatin is typically used for 10 days vaginally at bedtime.

While on Flagystatin (Metronidazole and Nystatin), you should not engage in sexual intercourse. There is a likelihood your partner would become infected with the infection.

Also, the drug manufacturer recommends that diaphragms and condoms not be used while on this medication as they may be ineffective. Therefore, patients should not engage in sexual intercourse while using Flagystatin (Metronidazole and Nystatin).

Some additional information about each drug can be found below.

Metronidazole

Metronidazole, when used vaginally, is used to treat infections caused by Trichomonas vaginalis. Metronidazole can also be used to treat other vaginal and bacterial infections. Some possible side effects include:

  • Vaginal discharge
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach upset, nausea and vomiting
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Vulvovaginal irritation
  • Urine that is darker in color

Also, individuals should not consume alcohol while on Metronidazole and for at least 1 day after completion of the full course of treatment. Consumption of alcohol with Metronidazole can result in a Disulfiram-like reaction which has the following side effects:

  • Flushing of face
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Chest pain
  • Sweating
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Anxiety

Nystatin

Nystatin is an anti-fungal drug used to treat yeast infections caused by Candida albicans. Nystatin is generally a well tolerated drug. Any irritations or rash should be immediately reported to your doctor or other health care provider.

Hypersensitivy reactions, though very rare, are a possible side effect that has been reported with this drug. Otherwise, Nystatin is a well tolerated drug effective in treating yeast infections.

Summary
  • Flagystatin (Metronidazole and Nystatin) is a combination drug used vaginally for the treatment of vaginal infections.
  • Individuals should abstain from sexual intercourse while using this Flagystatin. It is possible that a patient would infect her partner and condoms and diaphragms can possibly be ineffective while using this medication.
