Hi there. I am 20 years old and I am currently on the mini-pill (norethindrone tablets, 0.35mg). When I first started to take these birth control pills in the beginning of this year, I experienced spotting and very light periods. As of right now I have missed two periods in a row. I’m not sure why this is. I have been taking my pills on time every day. Is this a normal side effect or could I be pregnant?
Answer
Amenorrhea (lack of a period) is a potential side effect of norethindrone, but it is uncommon. Per the prescribing information for Ortho Micronor, a commonly prescribed norethindrone contraceptive pill:
Menstrual irregularity is the most frequently reported side effect. Frequent and irregular bleeding are common, while long duration of bleeding episodes and amenorrhea are less likely.
The overall incidence of amenorrhea while taking norethindrone is low, around 1%.
When To Test For Pregnancy While On Birth Control
If you have not had your period the last two months, you should absolutely take a pregnancy test or see your doctor. In general, if you are over 7 days late from the time you normally get your period, it is recommended to test to confirm or rule out pregnancy.
Over the counter pregnancy tests are very accurate and able to provide over 98% accuracy when taken on the day of your missed period or the day after.
