Does Aleve (Naproxen) Reduce Your Chance Of Becoming Pregnant?
Apr 12, 2018

Grace asked

I am TTC (trying to conceive) and currently 3 days post ovulation. I suffer with migraines and last night took Naproxen for the first time. Will this affect my chances of becoming pregnant/implantation this month? I'm so worried and certainly wont be taking them again after reading online.

Answer

PregnancyThere are small studies that have reported that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like Aleve (naproxen), may play a role in preventing ovulation.

NSAIDs, Ovulation And Pregnancy

One of the most recent studies reported that 75% of the women studied taking a NSAID had an unruptured dominant follicle. This means an oocyte (unfertilized egg) was not subsequently released, making it impossible to become pregnant. In this same study, 100% of the control group, those that did not take a NSAID, ovulated.

However, the role of NSAID use, like Aleve (naproxen), in implantation and then successful pregnancy is unclear. It is known that NSAIDS inhibit the formulation of prostaglandins, which have an important role in implantation and sustaining a pregnancy.

One study looked specifically at the possible role over the counter NSAIDS had in spontaneous abortion risk. The results did not find an increased risk of spontaneous abortion in women with over the counter NSAID use.

The study was different than previous studies because it specifically targeted over the counter NSAIDs and did not include prescription NSAIDs which may be used in higher doses. More studies are needed to comment further on the possible role of NSAIDS in interfering with implantation or the ability to get pregnant and sustain that pregnancy in general.

However, it is important to note that The FDA reported in a 2015 safety notice that NSAID use in the first trimester may be associated with an increased risk of miscarriage and therefore urges individuals to speak with their doctor before using over the counter analgesics when trying to become pregnant and during pregnancy.

Pain Relievers While Trying To Conceive

So, while trying to conceive, what are the safest recommended options for treatment of a migraine? Acetaminophen is the recommended drug to use for pain while trying to conceive and during pregnancy. Acetaminophen does not block prostaglandin production like NSAIDs do.  Other treatment options include preventive options like:

  • Healthy diet
  • Getting enough sleep every night
  • Half hour of exercise daily like walking
  • Stress relief such as yoga and meditation

A further discussion with your doctor or other health care provider should be had.  There may be other drug options available that may be appropriate for certain patients.

Summary

  • While it has been shown in small studies that NSAID drugs, like Naproxen, can interfere with ovulation, more studies are needed to determine the full effects on women trying to conceive.
  •  For women with migraine history, discussions should be had with their OBGYN to determine the best course of treatment of their migraines while still giving the women the best chance of becoming pregnant.
