Kate asked
I put in the Nuvaring and it burned for a little bit and when i pee it did too. Is that normal or did i put it in wrong?
Answer
Burning upon insertion of the NuvaRing is not a common side effect. It could be indicative that the Nuvaring has come into contact with an irritant or you have a vaginal infection.
Prior to inserting the Nuvaring, it is important that your hands have been washed and the Nuvaring has not come into contact with anything after it has been removed from the packaging. Hand washing is important not only to prevent infection but also to reduce the chance of contaminating the Nuvaring with a foreign substance on your fingers as this could cause a "burning" sensation.
If you followed the proper insertion procedures and you are still experiencing a burning sensation, please contact your doctor to determine the cause.
Below, is a list of the most "common" side effects you may experience. Common NuvaRing side effects may include:
- Headache
- Mood changes
- Decreased sex drive
- Vaginal irritation or discharge
- Pain in your cervix
- Menstrual cramps
- Breast pain
- Nausea
The most likely explanation for the "burning" you experienced, as mentioned above, is an contaminant on the Nuvaring or a vaginal infection such as a urinary tract infection or a yeast infection.
To identify a UTI, keep an eye out for the following symptoms:
- Burning feeling when you urinate
- Frequent or intense urge to urinate
- Pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen
- Cloudy, dark urinege-smelling urine
Aside from a UTI, a vaginal yeast infection could also be causing the burning sensation upon insertion of the Nuvaring. Please reach out to your doctor if you continue to experience your symptoms.
