When does Chantix go generic?
Answer
Chantix is currently slated to available generically May 2020. In the article linked, Pfizer, the manufacturer of Chantix, is on record stating the patents it holds should prevent Chantix generics from being available on the market until 2020.
Three generic drug manufacturers are scheduled to manufacture generic Chantix (varenicline): Apotex, Mylan & Teva.
It should be noted that May 2020 generic availability date is just an estimate as that is the date the patent for the drug expires. Often times, lawsuits and litigation can either push that date forward or backward a significant amount of time.
When Chantix is available generically, it will be available in the following names/dosages:
- Varenicline tartrate 0.5 mg tablet
- Varenicline tartrate 1 mg tablet
