What Is Zontivity?

Answer

Zontivity (vorapaxar) is a medication that inhibits platelet aggregation and is used both stroke and heart attack prophylaxis. Although there are many drugs for this use, Zontivity is the first drug in a class known as protease-activated receptor-1 (PAR-1) antagonist. Basically is works by stopping the formation of blot clots.

For patients taking Zontivity, many will also be taking it in combination with low-dose aspirin and/or clopidogrel after a heart attack. Studies have shown this further reduces CV events or death.

There are some major drawbacks to Zontivity. First of all, it has a fairly high bleeding risk and can be dangerous. Many of the drugs on the market that are like Zontivity can essentially be reversed if a patient is having bleeding problems. Zontivity unfortunately at the moment cannot be reversed and this can be dangerous if someone is having a bleeding issue. It's generally saved for patients with a very high cardiovascular risk due to its high risk of bleeding.  If severe bleeding does occurs, it is recommended to stop the drug and use supportive measures such as transfusions.

It is dosed once per day and may be administered with or without food.
