Nick asked
I have severe neck pain and have taken 3 10mg flexeril today (2 close together). Can I take one or two more to reduce the spasm?
Answer
No, it is not recommended to take more than your current dose of 30 mg. The maximum daily dose of Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) set forth by the manufacturer is 30 mg per day in divided doses. The typically dosing schedule is 10 mg every 8 hours.
The dosing recommendations for Flexeril have changed significantly in the past 15 years. Prior to February 2003, the maximum daily dosage was 60 mg per day. Based on the available safety and efficacy data, the manufacturer reduced the maximum dosage recommendation to 30 mg per day.
Currently, the manufacturer suggests starting with a dose of no more than 15 mg per day, which may be increased to 10 mg 3 times daily based on your response. Treatment duration beyond 2 to 3 weeks, on any dose, is not recommended.
The dosing recommendations changed, as mentioned above, based on the new safety and efficacy that was made available. The majority of data shows that higher doses of Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) doesn't provide a significant difference in pain relief and can lead to more adverse reactions.
It is important to take the medication as prescribed by your doctor. If you are not getting adequate pain relief, be sure to speak with him/her to adjust your dose or perhaps try an alternative medication. Taking more than the prescribed dose can be dangerous and can also cause problems if you are trying to refill the medication early at your pharmacy.
