What is Sitavig?

Answer

Sitavig is a new formulation of a drug that has been out since the 1980's known as acyclovir. Currently formulations of acyclovir include tablets, ointments and capsules. Sitavig is a buccal tablet that is put between the upper gum and the teeth. It is indicated for the treatment of cold sores which are caused the herpes virus. The buccal tablet must be placed on the side of the mouth where the cold sore is located.

The claim to fame for Sitavig is that you don't have to dose it that often. If you were prescribed acyclovir tablets, capsules or ointment, the typical dose is to use those 4 to 5 times a day! Sitavig only needs to be used once per episode. However, it should be noted that while effective, there are some drawbacks to Sitavig .

Firstly, the topical products, of which Sitavig is included typically only lessen the duration of a cold sore by about a day, so it doesn't make a huge difference. Taking antivirals by mouth typically are more effective and reduce the duration of a cold sore by about two days.

Also, Sitavig is expensive if it is not covered by the insurance. A package of Sitavig comes with two tablets and costs around $300. Compare this with the drug Abreva, which is available over the counter at a cost of only $20.

The most important thing to remember when treating cold sores is to treat them at the absolute first sign of symptoms!
