Having read your thorough analysis/review of SwellNoMore, I am wondering if this supplement serves the same purpose as the hydrochlorothiazide prescribed by my physician together with Losartan?

Answer

SwellNoMore should not be considered an alternative to hydrochlorothiazide. Hydrochlorothiazide has extensive evidence of benefit, especially when used in combination with other blood pressure medication classes.

SwellNoMore is an herbal medication that has a diuretic (i.e. water losing) effect. However, there have been no studies in regard to the use of SwellNoMore and potential cardiovascular benefits. While it may be safe to use with blood pressure medication, it should not be considered a substitute for hydrochlorothiazide.

It is important to note that the blood pressure decreasing effects of hydrochlorothiazide are not thought to be due to its diuretic effect. Data indicates hydrochlorothiazide only initially lowers blood pressure by decreasing cardiac output and reducing body fluid volume. However, cardiac output and fluid levels essentially return to normal after a short period of time. The blood pressure lowering effects of the drug are generally attributed to decreased peripheral vascular resistance i(i.e. vasodilation).

While SwellNoMore does have herbal ingredients that could potentially cause fluid loss, there is no evidence that it decreases blood pressure or helps to reduce negative cardiovascular events.

If you are having problems with side effects using hydrochlorothiazide, be sure to speak to your doctor regarding a possible alternative.
