Can I use Aimovig and Imitrex at the same time?
Answer
Yes, Aimovig and Imitrex (sumatriptan) can be safely used together and is even recommended in many cases. Aimovig is used to prevent migraines from happening while Imitrex is for the immediate treatment of migraine headaches. Most acute treatments for migraines are safe to use with Aimovig.
In fact, during the clinical trials for Aimovig (as referenced in the prescribing information), "triptan" medications, such as Imitrex, were allowed to be used at the same time with no apparent negative effects on either medication:
"Patients were allowed to use acute headache treatments including migraine-specific medications (i.e., triptans, ergotamine derivatives) and NSAIDs during the study."
The Aimovig prescribing information actually details use with Imitrex, as it is one of the most commonly used acute treatments for migraine attacks. It states:
"In a study in healthy volunteers, concomitant administration of erenumab-aooe [Aimovig] with sumatriptan [Imitrex] had no effect on the pharmacokinetics of sumatriptan [Imitrex]."
