Hope asked

Can you take Zyrtec with Buspirone? How long should you stay on Buspirone? How long does it take for Buspirone to start working?

Answer

Zyrtec (cetirizine) can safely be taken with Buspar (buspirone) as there is no interaction between the two medications.

Buspar (Buspirone) Information

Buspar (buspirone) is an antianxiety prescription medication that is not chemically or pharmacologically related to the benzodiazepines. It is thought to mainly work on the neurotransmitter serotonin. It is not thought to carry any abuse potential and does not have a risk of dependence, unlike benzodiazepines. Buspirone is generally considered safe to take long term and it is not classified as a controlled substance.

While effective for many, busprione generally has a slow onset on action for most individuals. Studies state that it can take up to 2 to 4 weeks to realize the full effects from the drug. In addition, if you have previously been on a benzodiazepine, buspirone generally isn't considered as effective.

In regard to the side effects, dizziness is the most commonly reported adverse reaction. According to the clinical trials for Buspar, 3.4% of patients experienced dizziness. Other CNS (Central Nervous System) effects reported were:

  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
  • Drowsiness
  • Lightheaded feeling
Zyrtec (Cetirizine)

Zyrtec is a "second generation" antihistamine that is an effective all day (i.e. 24 hour) allergy medication. Most second generation antihistamines, such as Claritin and Allegra, do not cause drowsiness or sedation. However, Zyrtec is not considered non-drowsy. The prescribing information for Zyrtec shows around 13% of users will experience sedation or drowsiness.
