Can I take iron tablets with oxazepam?

Answer

There are no drug interactions present between oxazepam and iron. They may be taken together if indications dictate.

Oxazepam

Oxazepam is a benzodiazepine commonly used to treat the symptoms associated with anxiety. Oxazepam has a short half-life compared to other benzodiazepines and is therefore used often to treat insomnia, as it should have minimal "hangover" effects. Oxazepam may be taken with or without food and its onset of action occurs within 1 to 2 hours when taken orally.

Adverse effects associated with taking oxezepam include but are not limited to:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Increased appetite
  • Decreased libido
  • Impaired cognition
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Blurred vision
  • Headache
Iron

Iron is one of the most essential building blocks the body needs for a variety of cells and enzymes. Iron is available in a variety of forms and is taken when there is a lack of iron intake in a persons diet or a iron deficiency (anemia) is observed. Anemia can manifest as one or more the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Pale skin
  • Tongue inflammation

The most common side effects associated with taking an iron supplement are upset stomach, nausea and vomiting. In order to avoid these effects iron supplements should be taken with food. There are also slow release iron formulations available for individuals who still have stomach issues even when taking with food.
