Gokul asked
Can we take Losartan and captopril together?
Answer
Losartan and captopril are generally not recommended to be taken together. Although they are in different classes of medication, they work on the same pathway (angiotensin-renin system). Current studies show no benefit in cardiovascular outcomes (e.g. reduced heart attack incidence) when used together.
Losartan
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (ARB). It is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure and diabetic nephropathy. Losartan may be taken without regard to food and the most common side effects experienced while taking losartan include but are not limited to:
- Dizziness
- Edema
- Diarrhea
Captopril
Captopril is the shortest acting angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure, congestive heart failure and diabetic nephropathy. Captopril should be taken an an empty stomach at least 1 hour before a meal. The most common side effects experienced while taking captopril include but are not limited to:
- Cough
- Dizziness
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Nausea
Taking Losartan With Capropril
Taking both an ARB and an ACE inhibitor together has not shown any therapeutic benefit compared to either class on its own. Taking both losartan and captopril can cause very serious side effects including but not limited to:
- Low blood pressure
- Diarrhea
- Renal dysfunction
- Hypokalemia
Be sure to discuss with your doctor the best treatment options for your blood pressure.
