  • There is no known drug interaction between Benadryl and Levaquin.

Answer

There is no known interaction between Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Levaquin (levofloxacin). They are considered safe to take together.

You did mention if the above medications (Benadryl and Levaquin) were safe with other sleep aids. The answer to that question is most likely "no".

The active ingredient in Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is very commonly used in many over the counter sleep aid product (such as NyQuil) due to its sedating properties. So in most cases, taking another sleep aid in addition to Benadryl would be double dosing.

If diphenhydramine isn't the active ingredient in the sleep aid product you are considering, it is important to be aware that most contain a similar antihistamine, like doxylamine (which is one of the active ingredients in NyQuil).

Taking Benadryl with a sleep aid that already contains it (or a similar antihistamine) isn't recommended due to the risk of additive side effects, like sedation and dizziness.

Alternative Sleep Aid Options

Be sure to discuss with your doctor the best options for sleep aids in your situation. While most over the counter products may not be an option due to them containing ingredients similar to Benadryl, you most likely have some alternatives available to you.

These include:

  • Melatonin
  • Herbal products (e.g. valerian)
  • Prescription options (e.g. Ambien)

As your doctor has your complete medical history, discussing your options with them would be prudent.
