Are there any known interactions with ferrous sulfate and Vicodin (hydrocodone/acetaminophen)?
Answer
There are no known interactions between ferrous sulfate (iron) and Vicodin when taken together. However, that being said, ferrous sulfate and Vicodin can sometimes cause similar GI (gastrointestinal) side effects and there is a chance of additive adverse reactions when combining the two medications.
Iron (Ferrous Sulfate)
Ferrous sulfate, a popular form of iron, is commonly used to treat and prevent iron deficiency. You normally receive iron from the foods that you eat but sometimes supplementation is needed. Iron is needed for numerous biological processes such as to carry oxygen in your red blood cells.
Common side effects of Ferrous sulfate include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Dark stools
- Upset stomach
It is important to take ferrous sulfate on an empty stomach for maximum absorption. Do not take with other multi-vitamins or minerals as iron overdose could be fatal especially in children.
Vicodin (Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen)
Vicodin (hydrocodone/acetaminophen) is commonly used to treat moderate to severe pain. Common side effects of Vicodin include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Dizziness
- Sedation
- Rash
- Pruritis
- Respiratory depression
- Motor impairment.
It is important that you do not operate machinery or drive while taking this medication due to the sedation that Vicodin can cause. Vicodin can be taken with or without food.
Taking Iron And Vicodin Together
From the common side effects listed, ferrous sulfate and Vicodin both have an increased risk of:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
While there is no drug-drug interaction between ferrous sulfate (iron) and Vicodin, taking both together could increase the risk of the side effect listed above.
A way to assist with these side effects is to make sure that you are drinking plenty of water. The recommended amount on average is 2 liters per day. Also, it could help to take the ferrous sulfate (iron) first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and then take the Vicodin 30 minutes later with breakfast. This could help to relieve some of the nausea and vomiting. Make sure that your doctor is aware of any over the counter medication or vitamins/supplements that you are taking.
