Can you take hydrocodone with Tylenol and Benadryl?

Answer

Hydrocodone can safely be taken with Tylenol (acetaminophen). In fact, most hydrocodone prescription products already contain acetaminophen. Such products include:

  • Vicodin
  • Norco
  • Lortab
  • Hycet

While Tylenol and hydrocodone are safe together, it is extremely important not to take additional Tylenol if your hydrocodone product already contains acetaminophen. This could lead to a potential overdose of acetaminophen, which can cause serious adverse effects to your liver.

The only hydrocodone products currently on the market in the United States that only contain hydrocodone are:

  • Hysingla ER
  • Zohydro ER

If you are not taking one of the products above, you generally shouldn't be taking Tylenol as well (to prevent overdosing).

In regard to Benadryl with hydrocodone, both have CNS (central nervous system) depressant effects and taking both together could cause additive sedation, drowsiness and confusion for some individuals. They shouldn't be taken at the same time in most cases but your doctor may recommend Benadryl for intermittent use for insomnia or to treat an allergic reaction.
