Can l take Dulcolax (for constipation ) with simvastatin and amlodipine?
Answer
There are no drug interactions between bisacodyl (Dulcolax) and simvastatin or amlodipine. However, there is a drug interaction between simvastatin and amlodipine. Amlodipine can increase the concentration of simvastatin which could lead to side effects including muscle cramps and rarely a severe condition known as rhabdomyolysis.
It is not recommended to exceed a simvastatin dose of 20 mg
per day while taking amlodipine. Patients who require higher doses of simvastatin
could be switched to an alternative statin such as Crestor (rosuvastatin) or
Lipitor (atorvastatin).
Information About Dulcolax
Bisacodyl was first approved by the FDA in 1957. It is a stimulant laxative used to treat constipation that is believed to work by irritating the mucosal lining of the intestine. It is also thought to effect fluid and electrolyte absorption.
Bisacodyl can be used for occasional constipation, but can also be used to clear the bowels prior to procedures including colon and prostate examinations. It is available as a tablet and a rectal suppository. The maximum recommended dose is 15 mg by mouth or 10 mg via the rectal route.
Bisacodyl is only partially absorbed at approximately 15%. It begins to work in about 6 to 8 hours with the oral route and 15 to 60 minutes with the rectal route.
Side effects of bisacodyl include abdominal pain or cramps,
diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Prolonged use of stimulant laxatives like bisacodyl is not recommended as it
can cause dependence. This could lead to constipation once use is discontinued.
