Vvazque asked
Can concerta and contrave interact together?
Answer
There is an interaction that has been identified between Concerta (methylphenidate) and Contrave (naltrexone/bupriopion hydrochloride). The interaction is an additive effect that will increase the risk of seizures. It is for this reason that caution is advised when combining these medications.
Concerta
Concerta is a central nervous stimulant that is used to treat attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD). It has been found that stimulants may lower the threshold to have a seizure.
Common side effects include:
- Nervousness
- Insomnia
- Anorexia
- Nausea
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Visual Disturbance
- Blood pressure and heart rate changes
Do not crush or chew the tablets, but the capsules may be opened and sprinkled into applesauce if you have trouble swallowing tablets.
Contrave
Contrave is a combination medication of an opioid antagonist, naltrexone, and an antidepressant, bupropion hydrochloride. Contrave is used, along with diet and excercise, for chronic weight management. The medication bupropion can cause seizures and appears to be related to the dose that is being taken.
Common side effects include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Insomnia
- Dry Mouth
- Increased blood pressure
- Anxiety
Do not take Contrave with a high in fat meal. When taking an antidepressant no matter the treatment it is important to monitor for mood changes or depression.
Interaction Between Concerta And Contrave
Knowing that both medications can increase the risk of seizures you should use caution when taking Concerta along with Contrave. This risk is increased further in patients that have a history of seizures. If you have a seizure while taking Contrave stop taking the medication. Talk with your doctor to determine what your risk is for seizures when taking Concerta and Contrave.
