Is CoQ10 and Zoloft 50 mg OK to take daily?

Answer

Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble compound, which is found in nearly all cells in the body and in high concentrations in the heart, liver, kidney, and pancreas. Coenzyme Q10 is taken as a supplement for a variety of uses including:

  • Congestive heart failure (CHF)
  • Chest pain
  • Statin induced Coenzyme Q10 depletion
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Migraine headaches

Coenzyme Q10 is present in small amounts from dietary sources, including meats and seafood. However, our bodies produce coenzyme Q10 in adequate amounts for necessary function.

What Does Coenzyme Q10 Interact With?

Being an endogenous compound (i.e. naturally produced in our bodies), coenzyme Q10 has few drug interactions. It is considered safe to take with Zoloft (sertraline) as there are no documented or reported adverse effects with the combination. A few of the only known potential drug interactions include:

  • Coumadin (Warfarin)
  • Antihypertensives

Antihypertensive Drugs

Coenzyme Q10 can decrease blood pressure and might have additive blood pressure lowering effects when used with antihypertensive drugs. A drop in blood pressure may cause dizziness and lightheadedness.

Blood Thinners

Coenzyme Q10 is chemically similar to vitamin K and may have procoagulant effects. Although the effects of coenzyme Q10 on clotting aren't very well known, there have been multiple case reports of decreased warfarin efficacy reported in those taking the supplement.
