Can you use Zegerid and Benadryl at the same time?

Answer

There is no known drug interaction between Benadryl and Zegerid. They are considered to be safe to take together.

Zegerid

Zegerid (omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate) is used to treat heartburn and acid reflux. It contains two active ingredients, omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate. Omeprazole is the active ingredient in Prilosec and acts as a "proton pump inhibitor", which blocks the release of gastric acid into the stomach. Sodium bicarbonate, most often known as baking soda, acts as a quick-acting antacid for more immediate relief after taking Zegerid by mouth.

Benadryl

Benadryl is a first generation antihistamine that exerts its effect by blocking the binding of histamine to histamine receptors. Histamine is a molecule that the body releases when it is exposed to an allergen, and is responsible for symptoms like rash, itching and a runny nose.

Benadryl is used to treat a number of allergic reactions, from those as mild as a small rash to something as severe as anaphylaxis. It can also be used to help aid in falling asleep. Some of the most common side effects seen in patients are:

  • Sedation
  • Confusion
  • Constipation
  • Urinary retention
