Lawrence asked
I have used Kava before for my anxiety and to help me sleep sometimes. Is it okay to take with Benadryl?
Answer
There is no drug-drug interaction between Benadryl and kava, also known as kava kava. However, both are sedating and use of both can cause additive sedation or drowsiness. Particular caution is recommended in the elderly where dizziness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating can be pronounced. If you plan on taking Benadryl and kava the same day, they should ideally be separated by at least 4 to 6 hours to avoid additive side effects.
What Is Kava?
Kava (Piper methysticum), also known as kava kava, is a plant native to the pacific islands. Historically, it has been used as a ceremonial drink to induce a relaxed state by first producing a feeling of numbness. It is said that eventually the person participating in the Kava ceremony will undergo a state of sleep.
In modern day medicine, potential medicinal uses for Kava Kava still include sedation as well as relief from anxiety, stress and restlessness. Though consensus on its effectiveness is still needed, some studies have found that doses between 60 mg and 240 mg/day are effective.
It is not recommended to take kava for more than three to six months without medical supervision as long term effects have not been studied.
There was initially concern that kava could cause liver dysfunction and was even banned in some European countries and Canada in the early 2000's. However, a review of evidence showed that the risk of liver toxicity is minimal and may be safer that originally thought. It has since been made available in countries where it was once banned. Nevertheless, liver function tests may be prudent with long-term use.
What Is Benadryl?
Benadryl is a sedating "first-generation" antihistamine. While effective for allergy symptoms, it is more commonly used as a sleep aid in a variety of over the counter products. In general, Benadryl should not be taken at the same time as other sedating medications.
Benadryl will begin to work in about 30 minutes, with each dose lasting between 4 to 6 hours. As mentioned above, there is no drug interaction with kava but they generally should not be taken at the same time due to the additive sedation.
