Is it safe to take 10mg of baclofen at bedtime along with 15mL of NyQuil at bedtime? I’m just sick and didn’t think about it having an interaction. I’d anticipate increased drowsiness or dizziness. But is there a serious life-threatening side effect possible?

Answer

You are correct that there is considered to be an interaction between baclofen (a muscle relaxant) and NyQuil (which contains the sedating antihistamine doxylamine) due to the risk of additive sedation.

Both baclofen and the doxylamine contained in NyQuil are CNS (central nervous system) depressants and can cause additive effects such as:

  • Sedation
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion

The combination is especially concerning in the elderly, as both can impair motor coordination, increasing the risk of falls.

Typically, the biggest concern when combining CNS depressants is the risk of dangerous respiratory depression. Both doxylamine and baclofen can cause respiratory depression, but generally only in cases of an overdose. Indicated doses of each shouldn't cause problems breathing for most individuals, but as everyone's medical situation is different, you should consult your doctor first before using them together.

Some individuals may be able to tolerate baclofen and NyQuil together, and the combination may be recommended by your doctor if it is the best course of treatment for your situation. However, as there is the potential of additive adverse reactions, you should discuss taking both with your doctor before using them, as they (and you) are the most familiar with your medical condition and concomitant conditions.
