Taking mirtazapine 15 mg for 6 weeks, also started Abilify 2mg. Is it OK to be taking both of these drugs.I would like to quit mirtazapine.

Answer

There is considered to be a moderate interaction between Abilify (aripiprazole) and mirtazapine. Taking both together can increase the risk of CNS (central nervous system) depression as well as increase the risk of QT prolongation, an EKG abnormality.

Abilify - Mirtazapine Interaction

Although rare, there is potentially an increased risk for QT prolongation and torsade de pointes (TdP) when taking mirtazapine and Abilify together. The prescribing information for Abilify advises caution in those taking other drugs that could cause QT prolongation or in those with pre-existing arrhythmia.

In addition, taking Abilify and mirtazapine can cause additive CNS depression, increasing the risk of sedation, drowsiness as well as additional cognitive and motor impairment.

Most individuals can take Abilify and mirtazapine together safely, but it is important to be aware of the additive CNS depression and potential of QT prolongation, especially in those with certain risk factors. Be sure to discuss with your doctor your drug therapy options or concerns with adverse effects.
