I am currently taking Daylette contraceptive pill for my acne but I took the last one today and as this pill is no longer prescribed, my doctor switched me to the Gedarel 30 pill. As I am only taking it for my acne, would it be best to start taking the new pill or come off the pill altogether? I am also taking erythromycin antibiotics.

Answer

Assuming you are taking both products as typically prescribed, you would simply start with the Gedarel after finishing your prior product, Daylette.

Both Daylette and Gedarel are classified as combined oral contraceptive pills, as they contain both an estrogen and a progestin. The usual dosing regimen for these products it to take one tablet by mouth daily for 21 days of active pills (24 days for Daylette). You can skip or take the placebo pills, it doesn't make a difference.

Switching from Daylette to Gedarel is as simply as starting the Gedarel as if you were continuing on the Daylette. Although both products are similar, you may experience some spotting or breakthrough bleeding for a few cycles until your body becomes used to the new product.
