Lyss asked

Has Rajani birth control been discontinued? I was switched by my pharmacy from Beyaz and now they are telling me Rajani is discontinued and my doctor must find a compatible birth control.

Answer

Rajani (Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol, Levomefolate) is still available and being manufactured by Actavis.

If it is not available at your pharmacy or if they are having problems ordering it, there are other products that are classified as substitutable by the FDA meaning that they contain the exact same active ingredients in the same amount.

Rajani is a generic product of the brand name birth control 'Beyaz' and contains the following ingredients:

  • Drospirenone
  • Ethinyl Estradiol
  • Levomefolate

Levomefolate is an absorbable form of the B vitamin folic acid and is added to reduce the risk of neural tube defects in infants. It may seem somewhat of an odd choice to add levomefolate to a birth control pill but many women who want to become pregnant try to do so immediately after stopping their birth control. It is recommended for women to get at least 0.4 mg per day of supplemental folic acid for at least one month before becoming pregnant to reduce the risk of neural tube defects.

Substitutable Options For Rajani

As stated above, Rajani has available alternatives. If Rajani isn't available, try to find the following, substitutable products:

Beyaz

This is the brand name product that Rajani is based from. It may carry a higher cost than Rajani as it is the brand name product.

Generic Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol, Levomefolate

Aside from Rajani, the other generic product for Beyaz is Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol, Levomefolate 3mg-0.02mg-0.451mg and 0.451mg Tablet, manufactured by Sandoz. The NDC (national drug code) number for this product is 52544-0298-41, which may assist your pharmacy in finding the product.

If for some reason none of the above products are available, ask your doctor to prescribe you Yaz. It contains the exact same ingredients in Beyaz EXCEPT for the B vitamin (which you may not need anyway). Yaz has a number of available generics including:

  • Gianvi
  • Loryna
  • Nikki
  • Vestura
