What do you recommend for the treatment of a cold (cough and runny nose) in a 2 year old?
Answer
Recommendations regarding cough and cold products for infants has changed a lot over the years. In 2008, the FDA recommended that all over-the-counter cough and cold medicines be avoided in children under two years old. If you grab any children's medicine over the counter and look at the label, it is unlikely you will find dosing instructions for anyone under the age of 6. Anyway, evidence suggests that OTC cough and cold products don't provide much benefit to young kids and they can be risky. Typically I just recommend a humidifier or vaporizer, lots of fluids, nasal saline drops w/ a bulb syringe if necessary. You can however give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever or discomfort.
