Northwest asked

What can happen if Dronabinol is not kept refrigerated? What is the time spectrum involved with it? By the hour? By the Day (24 hrs) 3 days (72 hrs)

Answer

I initially contacted the company that makes the brand name drug Marinol. The company is called AbbVie. They would not give me any information regarding stability of the medication out of the fridge. They said a specific customer would have to call to release that information.

My second call went to the generic manufacturer PAR. They make generic Marinol (Dronabinol) in 2.5, 5 and 10 mg strengths. They provided me with the following information:

  • Stored in the original container, sealed from humidity, and at a temperature no greater than 77 degrees Fahrenheit, dronabinol is good for 3 months outside the fridge.
  • Stored in an open container, or a container that is not the original, and at a relative humidity of no greater than 60%, the drug is good for 28 days.

For those curious, below is some general information regarding Marinol.

Marinol (Dronabinol)

Dronabinol is a man made (synthetic) oral preparation of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC). THC is one of 66 or more active compounds, found Cannabis sativa (i.e. marijuana). THC is thought to be responsible for many of the effects of marijuana. The prescription drug Dronabinol provides standardized THC concentrations and does not contain the other compounds found in crude marijuana.

There has been increased study and scientific analysis of the cannabinoid compounds for the management of various medical conditions, including pain management, memory loss (Alzheimer's), muscle spasms and glaucoma.

The drug Dronabinol is FDA-approved for the relief of nausea and vomiting secondary to cancer chemotherapy in patients who have failed to respond to other antiemetics. It can also be used as an appetite stimulant in cancer and AIDS patients. Dronabinol was approved by the FDA in May 1985.
