Is there such a thing as infant benadryl?

Answer

Infant Benadryl LiquidThere is no infant Benadryl product and the use of Benadryl is not recommended in children under 2 years old. In fact, the product information for Benadryl does not give dosing instructions for anyone under the age of 6 years old and should only be used if instructed by your doctor.

In 2007, the FDA gave recommendations on the dosing of over the counter cough and cold medications in children based on a serious history of reported adverse events. Per the FDA:

"Children under 2 years of age should not be given any kind of cough and cold product that contains a decongestant or antihistamine because serious and possibly life-threatening side effects could occur. Reported side effects of these products included convulsions, rapid heart rates and death."

Per the FDA recommendations, there is no Benadryl specifically labeled for infant dosing. Your pediatrician or other healthcare provider will give you the correct dosing of the Benadryl liquid that would be appropriate for your child if they recommend its use.

Nevertheless, historically manufacturers have recommended 6.25mg/dose for children 2 to 5 years of age. For infants under 2 years of age, it is not recommended to give initial doses over 6.25mg. As mentioned above however, Benadryl should not be used for any child under 6 years old unless recommended by the doctor.
