Jeffrey asked
How long do the effects of Valium last?
Answer
In the average person, the effects of Valium will last anywhere from four to six hours from the time the medication is taken by mouth. Taking it with food however, could decrease concentrations in the blood by up to 20% and may shorten the duration of action.
Valium has a rapid onset of action and effects will be felt about 15 minutes after the time of administration. It reaches peak concentrations about one hour after administration.
Valium has a long half life (time it takes for 50% of the drug to be metabolized) of around 30-60 hours and remains in the body well after the effects subside. It can be detected in the urine for up to three weeks, and can take almost two months to be completely eliminated from the body.
Remember, it is never safe to drink alcohol or drive under the influence of a drug like Valium. If you are worried about this medication and how you are reacting to it, please consult with your prescribing physician. And, if you are planning on discontinuing this medication, always seek guidance from your physician on tapering off, so withdrawal symptoms can be minimized.
