Julie asked

Can I take Flexeril with Xanax?

Answer

Xanax (alprazolam) and Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine) should be cautiously together as they are both CNS (central nervous system) depressants. Taking both together may result in additive sedative, CNS, and/or respiratory-depressant effects. These effects include:

  • Sedation
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Altered consciousness
  • Shallow breathing

As Xanax and Flexeril are used for different indications, they can be used together in certain situations but again, need to be used cautiously due to the additive effects they may cause. It is important to start at the lowest dose of either and increase based on tolerability and effect. Remember that:

  • You may feel drowsy or more tired when taking these drugs together.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how these drugs affect you.
  • Discuss any new or worsening side effects, such as breathing problems, confusion, or other new or unusual side effects with your health care provider.

Only use both together if they have been prescribed to you by your doctor.
