THill asked

I have been taking Lipitor (Atorvastatin) for many years and am having trouble remembering things.I read that these medications cause memory loss. Could my Lipitor be causing memory loss?

Answer

Does Lipitor (atorvastatin) Cause Memory Loss?As of November 2017, over 25% of adults over the age of 45 years old are taking a 'statin' medication. In the 'statin' class, Lipitor (atorvastatin) is the most commonly prescribed and used. Anecdotal reports of memory loss have been around since the introduction of these drugs and the collected evidence currently suggests that Lipitor, as well as other statin drugs, DO cause mild memory loss and cognitive impairment.

In 2012, nearly 20 years since the introduction of the first 'Statins', the FDA did a comprehensive review of their AERS (Adverse Event Reporting System) as well as a review of published data regarding the issue. They found a positive association regarding the use of 'Statin' drugs and memory loss. They have since added a new warning to the product labeling of all 'Statin' drugs, including Lipitor.

A review of the adverse event reports shows the type of people most commonly affected. In general, individuals are over 50 years old, with and without a prior history of memory problems. The memory loss was notable, but also was found to be reversible once the offending medication was discontinued. There does not appear to be more of an association between one specific 'Statin' drug versus another.

If memory loss does occur, and the 'Statin' drug is discontinued and then 're-introduced', memory loss tended to reoccur.

It is important to note that memory loss and cognitive impairment tends to be mild and reversible once the drug is discontinued.

There are a few theories in regard to why these medications can cause memory loss. The prevailing theory is that since cholesterol is a major factor in cell membrane synthesis, as well as an important component of our central nervous system, a decrease can impair neuron function and cell to cell signaling.

If you are experiencing memory loss, there may be some good news for you. An over the counter supplement, Co-Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has evidence that shows it may be beneficial in preventing and reversing 'Statin' associated memory loss. It is a common OTC supplement and should be available in most pharmacies and supplement stores. It is relatively inexpensive and is very well tolerated.
