Susi asked
Does Klonopin have to be taking everyday or can I take it as needed it? Also I was told that Klonopin can become addictive, do you recommend hydroxyzine instead?
Answer
No, Klonopin (clonazepam) does not need to be taken every day to be effective.
Unlike many types of medications, like antidepressants which can take from 4 to 12 weeks for full effects, the effects of Klonopin are generally noticed right away. However, and this is an important note, if you are taking Klonopin for the treatment of a panic disorder, it generally is not recommended to use on an as-needed basis as inconsistent use can cause intermittent relief of anxiety followed by an exacerbation of symptoms as concentrations of the drug decrease in your body.
Be sure to follow the instructions your doctor has given you regarding taking the medicine.
What Is Klonopin?
Klonopin (clonazepam) is a benzodiazepine medication, which produces central nervous system depression, mediated through the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). The effects of Klonopin include:
- Sedation
- Hypnosis
- Muscle relaxation
- Anticonvulsant activity
Klonopin is indicated for the treatment of seizures and panic disorders but is also used off label for insomnia, due to its sedative effects.
Klonopin, like all benzodiazepines, can cause physiologic dependence when taken for too long. Dependence to Klonopin can occur at typical indicated doses in as few as 3-6 weeks, with the risk increasing with longer use. If you have taken Klonopin for at least a few weeks and wish to discontinue, it should be slowly tapered down to minimize the risk of withdrawal.
Other drug options for anxiety, such as hydroxyzine, may be an option for you to discuss with your doctor. In general, hydroxyzine is a good first option to try as it is not associated with dependence like benzodiazepines are. However, if you have already taken Klonopin, you may not get quite the level of relief with hydroxyzine.
