Jennifer asked

What is the difference in ingredients between the two medications? I have tried Loryna twice and both times I have broken out into hives. The CVS pharmacist says I should be fine, but obviously he doesn't get that I am allergic to something in Loryna. They keep insisting on giving it to me. Thanks!

Answer

Gianvi and Loryna contain the same active ingredients and are substitutable per the FDA. Having said that, they DO contain different inactive ingredients and it is those inactive ingredients that may be causing issues for you. Below are the ingredients for each of the two products:

Lorya:

  • Drospirenone 3mg, Ethinyl Estradiol 0.02mg
  • Croscarmellose Sodium
  • Ferric Oxide
  • Lactose
  • Magnesium Stearate
  • Polyethylene Glycol
  • Polysorbate 80
  • Polyvinyl Alcohol
  • Povidone K30
  • Pregelatinized Starch
  • Talc
  • Titanium Dioxide

Gianvi:

  • Drospirenone 3mg, Ethinyl Estradiol 0.02mg
  • Corn Starch
  • Ferric Oxide
  • Hypromellose
  • Lactose
  • Magnesium Stearate
  • Povidone
  • Talc
  • Titanium Dioxide

While not common, I have certainly seen situations where two different generic brands with the same active but different inactive ingredients can cause issues for people. Many times companies switch to different generic manufacturers due to multiple reasons such as price, availability etc... I would ask the pharmacist to see if they get Gianvi for you and if not, I would find a pharmacy that can.
