Sheila asked
I accidentally stored the Shingrix vaccine in the freezer, does it affect it effectiveness?
Answer
According to the manufacturer of Shingrix, GlaxoSmithKline, Shingrix should NOT be stored in the freezer. If any component of the vaccine has been frozen, it must be discarded and is not to be used for administration.
Shingrix is supplied as two components:
- A single-dose vial of lyophilized gE antigen component (this vial has a brown cap)
- A single-dose vial of adjuvant suspension component (this vial has a blue-green cap)
If either component of the vaccine is frozen, it should be discarded.
Per the package insert of Shingrix:
Storage before Reconstitution
- Adjuvant suspension component vials: Store refrigerated between 2 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius (36 degrees Fahrenheit and 46 degrees Fahrenheit). Protect vials from light. Do not freeze. Discard if the adjuvant suspension has been frozen.
- Lyophilized gE antigen component vials: Store refrigerated between 2 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius (36 degrees Fahrenheit and 46 degrees Fahrenheit). Protect vials from light. Do not freeze. Discard if the antigen component has been frozen.
Storage after Reconstitution
After reconstitution, administer SHINGRIX immediately or store refrigerated between 2 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius (36 degrees Fahrenheit and 46 degrees Fahrenheit) and use within 6 hours. Discard reconstituted vaccine if not used within 6 hours. Do not freeze. Discard if the vaccine has been frozen.
